Classic Manhattan

One of the six basic cocktails in David Embury's 1948 classic 'The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks.' Rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters, stirred and served up with a cherry. Sophisticated and timeless.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz rye whiskey (or bourbon)
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Brandied cherry for garnish

Instructions

  1. 1. Combine whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters in a mixing glass with ice.
  2. 2. Stir for 20 seconds until well-chilled.
  3. 3. Strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass.
  4. 4. Garnish with a brandied cherry.
